A Snake In A Quarry...
The Rattler
Six Flags Fiesta Texas
San Antonio, Texas

When I was first moving through Texas on Route 10, on my way to Florida, I saw this monster from the freeway and kicked myself later for not stopping long enough to ride it. I delayed my experience of a truly unique coaster with a nice kick for far too long. Of course, this time around, it was a scheduled stop and we arrived late in the afternoon for a walk around the park, checking out shooting locations and getting a feel for the place. Fairly new, Fiesta Texas is the latest Six Flags acquisition and is still being radically developed. Its star coaster is a bit of fun called The Rattler

Built in, around, over and through a natural limestone quarry, the Rattler launches you from the station and up a lift that stands 180 feet above the park. After a slight speed bump, you hit the first drop of 166 feet and begin the quick acceleration up to 73 m.p.h. This is at a 61 degree angle too, bonzer!

But don't relax yet, as you hit a wide and steeply banked fan turn to the left, setting the wood afire as you careen up what resembles a lift hill, but instead is sort of a natural break run that leads you into a curious triple helix that winds and dips and shakes you as the trains pick up more and more speed.

The second drop is probably the most alarming, with sudden velocity, the trains dip right into the side of the quarry and emerge into the sunlight to negotiate some more disorientating dips before returning to the station.

At 2 minutes and 15 seconds and over 5000 feet of track, the Rattler is not just another snake in the grass. Once you're bitten, you're hooked.

This ride has been around since the place opened, but the newest addition was on the other side of the park. When the news reports came in about this particular creation, I have to admit that I was intrigued. Especially with a name like The Joker's Revenge.
