"When I moved to Florida in 1993, Downtown Disney was just beginning its huge expansion. In the summer of 1994, I happened to pass a dulcimer shop that was set up in front of the Great Southern Crafts Company. Talking with the man behind the counter, David Marks, it wasn't long before I was working there for Folkcraft Instruments. That summer, I would buy three of their dulcimers, which became my main axes for a number of years. After Folkcraft bought the Folkroots dulcimer company, I ended up buying one of those dulcimers as well.
Last year, Folkcraft approached me about an endorsement, which was a no-brainer since I already owned four of the instruments and loved them so much. When it came time to design my new dulcimer, I went with a double-neck design, butternut top and black walnut sides and bottom, ebony fretboard overlay, a Galax back, flat head tuners, dolphin sound holes and Fishman pickups with a Prefix Pro E.Q. system. More specs can be found here.
This rockin' new dulcimer was delivered to me at the 2009 Winter NAMM show in Anaheim, California where I demonstrated instruments for the company. Needless to say, she is an astonishing instrument, both visually and sonically. Her acoustic tone is sweet and clear with a surprising punch and lots of volume. Her plugged-in tone is pure and clean with lots of bass response. She is, without a doubt, the finest dulcimer I own and I'm looking forward to many long hours of music-making with her.
Regarding her name, it's sort of a two-fold deal: back in my California-livin' days, I used to go on dates to the Disneyland Hotel where a show called 'Dancing Waters' was presented nightly. One of the tunes in that show was John Denver's tune 'Annie's Song.' Since she was delivered to me right around the corner from where such beautiful memories took place, in Anaheim no less, the name 'Annie' seemed perfect."
