Birdie
Born: June 16, 2008 Maker: Paul Conrad/Timbre Hill Dulcimer Creations Model: Prototype 6
"I began a thread on the Everything Dulcimer discussion forums about soprano dulcimers and how come no-one has made one with a big body for a bigger sound and more sustain. Ohio luthier Paul Conrad was quick to jump in and begin musing over the possibilities. Sure enough, about a year later, he had rigged up a prototype and brought it to a festival for me to tinker with as he made notes about specifications and so forth. Pitching the concept that he build one for me to test drive, Paul was very encouraged by the chance to have someone really give one of his instruments a full in-the-field workout. About a month later, specs in place, Paul appeared at another festival with 'Birdie' (extra points for guessing where the name came from) in hand. She's a sweet thing with a removable side piece that was placed there for my anchoring, due to the high fretboard. She's fully electric with a piezo pickup and volume control. With six strings, currently tuned CGC, she really has a lot of sustain and volume, plus a shiny sort of mandolin tone that compliments other dulcimers. The test drive is in progress. Not only does Birdie sound great - but she looks fantastic (even for a quickly assembled prototype.) Paul's trademark quilting woodwork is eye-popping, an incredible display of creative design."
